Subject: Oldham C. T. 408 (NBU 508)
Chassis: Leyland Titan PD2/20
Body: Crossley H33/28R
Location: Oldham, Clegg Street Bus Station
Date: c.1966

408 leaves the North Western bus station on Clegg Street on the 153…except that I don’t believe this photograph is as it first seems.

There are no passengers on board, probably not in itself remarkable, but the driver is also stood outside the vehicle. It’s also showing 153 to Uppermill via Scouthead and Oldham didn’t work that way apart from an odd evening journey that didn’t start here. Finally, there are no signs above and to the side of the entrance.

All these factors make me believe this was a trial run of an Oldham bus into the new bus station prior to its opening - which would also explain why the photographer was on hand.

From an original slide in the David Beilby collection, photographer unknown.
