Vehicle: SELNEC Southern 5154 (LBU 154E)
Location: Union Street, Oldham
Date: 8–Aug-1970

Oldham Atlantean 154 was one of the first buses to be painted in the new SELNEC orange livery in 1970 and is seen in this guise pulling out of Clegg Street (then one-way downhill) onto Union Street.

The Lyceum building had blackened with the pollution of Oldham’s many chimneys and would be cleaned a few years later.

The Bath Hotel took its name from the Central Baths across the road and even opened in the same year (1854). The building was modified after the date of this photo, in conjunction with the opening of Town Square bus station. To allow buses from Union Street to turn left into Clegg Street the building was effectively “chamfered” on the corner. The Bath Hotel later took the name Dr. Syntax, previously used by a pub on High Street, but has since closed.
