On the fine spring evening of 20th April 1976 ex-Stockport PD3 5889 stops at the end of Wellington Road in a scene that did not change much for many years. There were even so some less-obvious changes, particularly the former Iredale's bakery which was to the left of the bus and still very much open for business at the time. The building with the gothic windows above the maroon Marina was originally a toll house for the Standedge-Oldham Turnpike trust and was built in 1827. It worked as a toll house until 1885 when the turnpike acts expired (the cause of much local celebration). It has more recently been sympathetically extended and restored. The stone building on the left of the photograph is part of Wellington Mills which have now been demolished, which has changed the aspect here significantly in more recent years.
