421 was one of three of the batch to remain in crimson and white at SELNEC takeover. It has the distinction of being the only tin-front to be repainted from crimson direct into SELNEC orange. Although the service was by this date one-man-operated, there were additional peak workings (in the morning in particular) which were still crew-operated. Note the parade of traditional British HGVs climbing West Street on the left - this is just before the by-pass opened and heavy traffic could avoid the town centre.
