A recent innovation in the construction of special work has been the use of this special rail section without the groove. This rail can then have the groove machined as required. This obviates the need for welding a filler strip but is particularly beneficial where there are transitions between flange running and rail head running as the filler strip has to taper to zero thickness, making welding of a smooth transition difficult.
