The arrival of Metrolink in Oldham has seen great changes to the town and the prime purpose of the gallery was originally to record those changes. However, it was clear that most of the route of Metrolink had already seen many changes and those relating to the construction of the tramway were just part of the continuing evolution of the town. I have therefore expanded the scope of the gallery to cover the whole of the story to the best of my ability given the material available.
Most of the photographs in this gallery are my own and many have not been published before. It is fortunate that I got my first decent camera at the beginning of 1970 enabling me to record a lot of the changes taking place around Mumps at that time with the construction of the by-pass.
The gallery is largely targeted at transport enthusiasts but I have incorporated a lot of local history both in the images, not all of which are photographs, and in the captions. I hope you find it evocative, informative and entertaining. The photographs are arranged in geographical sequence, so that you can work your way along the route by progressing through the gallery or, if you prefer, by selecting the “Slide Show” option.
In a work on this scale I will inevitably have introduced quite a few errors and so I welcome corrections and additional information.
