The 44 has a lot in common with the 43. They share the first part of the route from Schottentor and after separating the 44 comes back to meet up again with the 43 at the Dornbach terminus.
It is worked by Hernals depot using A and A1 class ULF cars. Previously E1 cars had been used, they ran on this service without trailers.
