The 44 had a lot in common with the 43. They shared the first part of the route from Schottentor and after separating the 44 came back to meet up again with the 43 at the Dornbach terminus.
It was worked by Hernals depot using A and A1 class ULF cars. Previously E1 cars had been used, they ran on this service without trailers.
From 3rd July 2017 the line ceased operation due to work on re-modelling the junction at Johann-Nepomuk-Berger-Platz and was temporarily replaced by buses. On completion of this work a new 44 service was introduced from Schottentor to Ottakringer Straße on 2nd September 2017, the change being in effect an exchange of the eastern terminii of the 2 and 44 services.
