The East Lancs bodies such as on 717 featured a more modern interior. Just visible on the right is the handle for the side destination blind, which as described elsewhere in the gallery was above the second window from the rear. It may be that experience with the earlier East Lancs bodies had shown that passengers on the bench seat banged their heads on it when getting up, or may simply be a result of the need to house the door mechanism).
