Subject: Oldham C. T. 247 (DBU 247)
Location: Oldham Mumps
Date: 1964

Passing the end of Albert Street is Oldham 247, one of the first 8-foot wide buses built for use in this country. Oldham were very advanced in this respect and only bought one batch of new buses after the war to the then legal maximum width of 7’-6”. Special dispensation was initially required to run them on certain routes until the law was changed.

At the right of the picture is The Music Box, which I would have gone into about that time to buy the Beatles’ “Can’t Buy Me Love”.

Behind the bus is the butcher’s shop of Stanley Ogden, shortly to relocate to new premises in Grotton and still trading today. The clock with its “Meat under the clock” slogan moved too and can still be seen.
