The Manchester Street roundabout in the background had only opened earlier that year and the by-pass was not open at the time of the photograph. It was another ten years before the extension to the by-pass opened, crossing the roundabout on a flyover. Giles Shaw, to the right, was a long-established engineer's merchant but has more recently ceased trading.
