This photograph took a little time to determine the location, partly because this section of George Street seems to have been rarely photographed and also the angle seems to have removed the apparent slope. Notable behind 459 in original condition is the erstwhile Volunteer public house, which closed in 1955 and went on to become Oldham’s first Chinese restaurant, in which form it is seen here. Note also on the end of the building the advert for Cadbury’s Dairy Milk chocolate, which we were informed had a glass and a half of milk in every bar. The size of the glass was never specified….
