Subject: Durban Corporation Transport 39 Chassis: AEC 664T Body: English Electric H70D Location: Preston, Dick, Kerr Works Date: 1939
This rear view highlights a feature of this batch. They were eight feet wide and the front axles were designed for the greater width. However, the rear bogie was not which resulted in the body overhanging the chassis noticeably in this area.
Two distinctive Durban features had yet to be added and were presumably done after shipping. Sea angling (particularly for sharks) is a popular pastime in the coastal City and provision was made at the rear for carrying fishing rods. These rested in the area of the bumper and were retained by loops, one above the lower deck window and a further one below the upper deck windows.
The second Durban feature was the addition of double bars across the half-drop windows to prevent people leaning out too far, although the events leading up to this addition are unclear.
