These galleries cover the passenger transport operations of Ashton-under-Lyne Corporation. These started with the first tram service opened in 1902 by Ashton-under-Lyne Corporation Tramways. As both trolleybuses and motorbuses were introduced the title was changed in 1925 to Ashton-under-Lyne Corporation Tramways and Motors which had, in the mid-thirties and before the final tram abandonment, changed again to Ashton-under-Lyne Corporation Passenger Transport until it became part of SELNEC from 1st November 1969. For a relatively-small fleet Ashton’s operations were quite complex with nearly all the services being jointly-operated, or at least jointly-licensed.

The various Ashton galleries don’t have a very large amount of content as yet but this will gradually increase in the future. The existing content is related to material already found in other galleries.

The theme used for all the Ashton galleries reflects the livery style of dark blue and white with red bands, the final version of which was adopted in 1935 to celebrate King George Vs Silver Jubilee. It was used from then un til late 1954 when the brighter and simpler peacock blue and cream livery was adopted which remained, with detail alterations, until the end of the existence of the undertaking. Thus the theme doesn’t always represent the livery shown or even carried by the vehicle(s) shown.
