This is my attempt at a photographic survey of Vienna's impressive tram system. The main impetus for the gallery came from a series of visits in 2008 and 2009 but several subsequent visits have attempted to keep pace with developments. There is also now a small quantity of older material added dating from either the late sixties/early seventies or from the mid-eighties.

I cannot count myself as an expert on either the trams or the City of Vienna and have therefore avoided detailed historical references in the captions, keeping to facts about the vehicle and location, together with supporting information from the time of photographing.

The gallery is structured by route (line) and each one works in a geographical progression from one end of the route to the other. Other photos which cannot fit into this structure are grouped according to subject.

Over time the service network has changed and the gallery structure has to reflect that. Where a service is simply extended or shortened it has been kept as one gallery, but when it changes to run over a different route I have separate galleries for the different stages in a service’s evolution.

A note on times - I now leave my camera set permanently on GMT. As all these photos are taken in the summer local time was two hours ahead of the time shown, but in those from May 2008 the local time was just one hour ahead.
