Subject: London Transport 1670 (FXH 670) Chassis: AEC/English Electric chassisless Body: English Electric H40/28R Location: Preston, Dick, Kerr Works Date: 1939
One advantage of the chassisless construction was that the main chassis rails as such didn't exist and their equivalents were much more widely spaced, helped by the fact that six-wheel trolleybuses only had single tyres. The greater space allowed for improved installation for things like the traction motor, which is mounted in line with the drive input to the rear bogie (instead of offset), even though that input is offset to reduce differential housing intrusion into the lower saloon. The construction also allowed for a slightly lower saloon floor.
