This distant view of Speedwell's KX54 NKH passing through Roaches shows the size of the retaining wall (30 feet high at its maximum) built to create a site for the Mossley and Saddleworth Gas Company's works in 1931. The works had its own sidings off the Micklehurst Loop line and a small Peckett shunter named Roaches. It closed around 1959 and the site has been given over to other non-residential uses including bus preservation, as it is home to the Tameside Transport Collection.
