SS200

This evocative view of Uppermill Square dates from 3rd June 1963 and features prominently the concrete shelters that were a feature of the Saddleworth bus scene for many years. Michael Fox has been delving and it transpires that Saddleworth Urban District Council contracted to buy twelve of these for the princely sum of £1453 and 12 shillings in November 1953 from Messrs. J Ellis of St. Annes.

Having done a mental check this was clearly not all the shelters of this style but would have made a difference for quite a lot of people in a Saddleworth winter.

The bus stop flags were unique cast examples with the nearer one reading “Q here for Delph Station Oldham and Manchester”, whilst the far one said “Q here for Delph Carrcote Denshaw Diggle and Huddersfield” - it’s not clear where you queued for Newhey!
