Subject: Leeds C. T. 151 Maker: Leeds City Tramways Truck: Smith Patent Pendulum Seating: 37/23 Location: Kirkstall, Abbey Road Date: c.Feb-1930
Although these trams are known to enthusiasts as 'Horsfields', after the General Manager who introduced them, they were always known to staff as 'Showboats'. They were also designated as P35s by the Department but this would be inaccurate in the case of this tram intially, although it was fitted with a Peckham P35 truck about 1931. The Smith Patent Pendulum truck is believed to have been unique, it was supplied by the Malleable Steel Castings Company of Pendleton. They had manufactured Peckham trucks and this truck incorporated several components of Peckham style.
151 entered service on 12th February 1930 and last ran in service on 28th March 1959, going for scrap the following June.
This photograph shows that the date that appears as a six-digit number below the negative number on BTH negatives is not always the date of the photograph and is presumably when this image was added to their library.
