116 has come along Egerton Street in the background and is travelling briefly along Radcliffe Street before turning into Rock Street. This part of Radcliffe Street is now St. Mary's Way and the junction with Rock Street in this direction has been closed.
Behind is part of the biggest of the blocks of the St. Mary's housing scheme, Jespersen Street. This development was built in 1966-67, replacing crowded and poor terraced housing. It was built using low-cost industrial techniques from Scandinavia and featured a district heating system which was to prove very unreliable. After a brief initial burst of popularity the development of 530 dwellings fell into terminal decay and was demolished in the 'nineties.
