The brickwork to the right reveals the location of the steps up to the platform on the branch from Oldham Werneth. Although closed by this date part of it remained in use at the time of the photograph to serve a coal concentration depot in Chadderton, a line not opened until 1914. Middleton Junction West signal box is clearly visible along with its maroon LMR sign. Opened in 1882 it was destroyed by fire on 12th September 1990.
