4046 passes the Great Western as it nears the summit on Standedge on 16th January 1999. This pub is the last survivor on this road, the other long-established ones having closed in recent years as a consequence of changing leisure habits. In contrast, however, is the opening of The Carriage House, visible in the right distance. This was once a filling station and transport cafe (and in that role is glimpsed very briefly in the 1960 film "Hell is a City"), but it has now become a pub/restaurant. Off-picture to the right is Redbrook reservoir, which supplies the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and is also the venue for a New Year's Day swim for a few hardy souls from clubs in Royton.
