As well as the rear registration plate at the offside, this bus also has the registration number in the top left corner of the rear window. It’s only visible if you know and you look hard, however, the evidence is much clearer in the shadow on the rear bulkhead where the letters ‘HF’ can clearly be seen.

The explanation for this apparently strange phenomenon is that the letters would need to be shaded red to prevent a white light showing at the rear (even though the saloon lighting was otherwise visible) and with the film being non-panchromatic, as was normal in those days and meaning not sensitive to red light, the registration would look to be one block of black.
