SP6348 NSWGR 4601 Manchester Whitworth Street

Subject: Wynn’s 161 (EDW 96) hauling NSWGR 4601
Location: Manchester, Whitworth Street
Date: c.1956

Under a further maze of trolleybus overhead 4601 is hauled along Whitworth Street in Manchester. It is passing the Sackville Street building of the Manchester College of Technology at a significant time in its history.

Work is almost completed on its expansion, a project started as far back as 1938 but affected by the war and economic constraints. On the conclusion of this work in 1956 the college would receive its own independent University status.

From 1966 it became known as the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) until it became part of the University of Manchester in 2004.

The car nearest the camera on the right is a Vauxhall Velox and carries a registration that would have considerable value today!
