Subject: Newport C. T. 16 (TDW 316J)
Chassis: Leyland Atlantean PDR1A/1
Body: Alexander H43/31F
Location: Cardiff, Sophia Gardens
Date: 13-Jun-1981

Sophia Gardens was the venue for the Welsh Miner’s Gala in 1981, an even which brought several coaches and buses along. Carrying the Crosskeys Silver Band was Newport 16, which would become Taff-Ely 86 before too long.

Alongside the Hill’s of Tredegar Bedford was carrying the Markham and District Band. This had been a very successful colliery band but was almost wiped out by a disastrous flood in 1976 and at the time of the photograph was working its way back to its former glory.
