A large crowd of visitors from many Welsh authorities are present prior to the formal inaugural run on the new trolleybus system in Pontypridd.

The system was opened by the town’s MP, Thomas Mardy Jones who may be the person immediately to the right of the gent with the eye patch on the right side of the photograph.

Thomas Mardy Jones’ career as an MP was destined to end soon after the taking of this photograph in quite notorious circumstances. As an MP he was allocated free railway tickets but these were strictly non-transferable. He sent them for his wife and daughter to travel to London only they were stopped by the GWR.

He resigned as an MP the day before the trial. He stood as an Independent Labour candidate in the 1931 General Election but only polled just over 1,000 votes.
