A more modern North Western vehicle making the climb on 5th August 1972 was this Alexander-bodied Dennis Loline. These were fun vehicles to travel on as the overdrive gearbox combined with the power of a Gardner 6LX engine gave them a good turn of speed, not that they had chance to use it on this service.......

It's difficult to imagine that I took this photograph having been preparing preserved buses for the Trans Pennine Run. By this time it was owned by SELNEC Cheshire and the logo can be made out on the lower panels. The advert on the side is a reminder that North Western's fares were relatively expensive and one of the benfits of the takeover by SELNEC was reduced fares.
