R1348 had been R171 and R3171 but despite many fleet number changes it was a long-term Aberdare resident, where this type were referred to as "Long Toms". The longer REs tended to be allocated to the workings that ran to Ynysybwl, probably as a legacy of when it was worked by double-deckers. This seemed to matter less as time passed and the level of patronage fell.
