Subject: National Welsh 3 (C103 HKG) Chassis: Ford Transit 190D Body: Robin Hood B16F (on Dormobile shell) Location: Barry, Presto Supermarket (off Palmerston Road) Date: c.Oct-1986
The Eastern terminus of the B1, one of the original Bustler routes, was the the Presto supermarket.
This store building illustrates how much change there has been in retailing in the UK in more recent years. It started off as a Tower Discounts store before becoming a Presto supermarket. Most Presto stores (including this one) became Safeway stores in 1987 and a few years later this building was demolished, the site becoming part of the car park for a much larger store opened nearby. Safeway was purchased by Morrisons in 2004 and the Safeway name disappeared by the following year. However, part of the deal involved selling some stores (including this one) to Waitrose to meet competition requirements. Waitrose announced the closure of the store in 2019 and at the time of writing it is occupied by Home Bargains and Icelandic - however, that could be different by the time you read this!
The B1 was every ten minutes during weekday daytimes and ran across the town to Colcot Estate.
