Subject: Salford C. T. 151
Maker: Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works, Preston
Bogies: Brill 22E (reversed)
Seating: 48
Location: Salford, Frederick Road depot
Date: c.Mar-1905

The body of Salford 151 was delivered to Salford on 16th March 1905 and is seen here at Frederick Road depot after being mounted on its trucks. Fortunately in this instance the photographer did not mask the negative, which means we see quite a few members of Salford staff trying to get in on the photo.

It had originally been planned to buy twenty of the type but 151's entry into service had not been smooth, with a tendency to derail (a common problem with reversed maximum traction trucks) and the length of the car led to gauging issues at certain locations. It was eventually decided to buy another nine, with the remaining trams of the twenty instead being short canopy double-deckers.

The nine subsequent cars did not have the drop windows in the end compartments, which apparently saved £12 per car.
