Subject: Darlington C. T. 70 (LHN 782)
Chassis: BUT 9611T
Body: East Lancs H30/26R
Location: Darlington, Woodland Road
Date: c.1949

A broadside view of 70. This batch of double-deckers was largely confined to the 5 service, which ran from Park Lane, just south of Bank Top station into the town centre then made a clockwise loop via Cockerton and Hope Town before returning to the town centre and Park Lane. They would occasionally appear on the 4 which ran from Coniscliffe Road into the town centre and then made the same loop in the anti-clockwise direction. As this didn't happen very often it resulted in the circular service being usually worked by double-deckers in one direction and single-deckers the other way.

Low bridges prevented the use of double-deck trolleybuses on the other routes. When the BUTs were originally ordered it had been planned to carry out works to permit the use of double-deckers but this was not proceeded with following a decision to abandon the trolleybuses.
