Subject: City of Cardiff 46 (EBO 900) Chassis: Crossley DD42/5 Body: Alexander L27/26R Location: Merthyr Tydfil, Castle Street Date: early 1950s
Cardiff's six Crossleys of this design entered service in Jun-1949 and had Alexander lowbridge bodywork. They were described as Scottish Commercial bodies for some time as the batch had been supplied through Scottish Commercial (as dealers) and had an internal transfer reflecting this (and also I suspect no Alexander badge). However it was the standard Alexander body of the period, derived from the classic Leyland design.
They were purchased primarily for the Tredegar service, the 36, which had a low bridge at Maes-y-Cymmer. This service didn't require all six and another route they were used on was the 41 to Merthyr Tydfil on which 46 is seen, still in original condition here with the large destination display. When withdrawn in 1966 this bus was sold for preservation and still exists today.
