GHN322

Subject: Darlington C. T. 11 (GHN 322)
Chassis: Karrier E4S
Body: East Lancs B32C
Location: Harrowgate Hill, North Road
Date: c.1942

In 1942 Darlington received two unusual and notable Karrier E4S trolleybuses. They were unusual as there were only five of this model made, with the other three being for York over ten years earlier. As single-deck chassis they were 1'-6" longer that the double-deck E4. They were also notable as the last Karrier-designed trolleybuses to be built. The sister vehicle to 11 was 1 (GHN 321).

11 is seen here at the northern extremity of the small Darlington system, 11 is turning in the junction between North Road (the A1) and Longfield Road. The water tank in the background is deceptive - in a railway town such as Darlington the automatic assumption is that it is for railway use. However, it is actually related to the Harrowgate Hill reservoir which is out of sight, immediately behind.

11 was sold to Bradford for spares in November 1954, joining the last Karrier-designed double-decker there.
