The 49 route's most interesting feature is the operation along the relatively-narrow Siebensterngasse where there is little room for parked cars and where there is the clearances are very tight! The route is about 8.5km long and the Hütteldorf terminus is the most westerly part of the Vienna tram system.

Ottakring and Rudolfsheim depots provide the vehicles which are E1 cars hauling c3 and c4 trailers and B or B1 class ULF cars.
