P3311

Subject: Bradford C.T. 544 (KW 2601)
Chassis: Leyland/English Electric
Body: English Electric B36C
Location: Preston, Dick, Kerr Works
Date: 1928

Built on a modified Leyland Lion LSC1 chassis, 544 was the first of sixteen of the type delivered in two batches. These were employed mainly on the Oakenshaw service which had been extended to the City in 1927. The destination "Wyke" is evidence of wider ambitions with aspirations to run there beyond Oakenshaw.

The Oakenshaw service closed quietly in 1940, partly due to the need to renew a lot of electrical equipment but also because the corridor was well-served with buses to destinations further afield. Only a few of these Leylands lasted until 1940, many were withdrawn in 1938 including 544.
