The first vehicle numbered in the slightly amended scheme with the year digits at the beginning was LR8001, appropriately enough also new in Jan-1980.

It is approaching the terminus at Blaenrhondda on a typical damp valleys day. The track in the foreground once led to Fernhill Nos 1 and 2 collieries, which closed in 1966. It has since disappeared following the building of a bus turning circle here.
