It's always difficult to know how to refer to this locality now, as I always used to use Werneth Fire Station. This building, seen in the background, was built in 1897 and replaced earlier premises opened in 1864 in John Street. It also incorporated an ambulance station as this service became a responsibility of the fire brigade at this time, a situation which lasted until the Second World War. In addition a Police Station was added on Frederick Street in 1898. The Fire Station closed in March 1981 and was demolished in the late-1980s.
The signpost shows the various routes from this junction - none of these are now possible as Oxford Street is one-way.
