This is a view to set the scene. Taken on 23rd June 1970 from the bottom of the Creamline yard, Tonmawr Road is in the foreground. Just off-camera to the right there was a dogleg in the road where it crossed over the trackbed of the old South Wales Mineral Railway which cut its way through the hillside in the distance through Gyfylchi tunnel to reach the Afan valley. Tracks were also shared with the Port Talbot Railway (junctions with which can be seen in other views in this gallery) but that turned off to the left in the near distance to follow Cwm Pelena.

This tip is the what contributed to the atmosphere of Tonmawr. As can be seen it is smouldering in several places and there was a sulphurous presence in my experience. I don't know where the material came from, as there wasn't a colliery just here.
