Subject: Cardiff C. T. 214 (DBO 474) Chassis: BUT 9641T Body: East Lancs H38/29D Location: Cardiff, Cowbridge Road East Date: c.1950
This rear view of 214 is full of interesting detail, as well as showing how dirty the rear end of trolleybus could become quite rapidly.
It is taken before the abolition of the Pay As You Enter (PAYE) scheme. There is still a notice in the rear nearside lower deck window reminding passengers, informing them of the fare and warning them that no change would be given. The flat fare had increased from the original penny to three halfpence which didn't help with continually finding the right change. Passengers placed coins in a slot and the conductor, seated in the little alcove within the rear bulkhead, was meant to check that they had paid the correct amount. The last day of PAYE operation was November 10th 1950.
Also visible is the duty number plate (F21) just behind the nearside destination blind and the "Trolleybus" label in the rear window to remind other trolleybus drivers not to overtake.
