Subject: North Western 910 (VDB 910) Location: Union Street, Oldham Date: 2-Sep-1970
This would have been the 0930 departure for Cleveleys. However, the shortage of passengers can be probably be explained by the routing of the coach, which would be leaving the North Western depot to run empty to the Yelloway coach station at Mumps, where the journey actually started, only to return to this bus station to pick up.
The X49 had only recently been extended from Cleveleys to Fleetwood and what is not clear now is whether this was showing Cleveleys because Fleetwood was not on the blind, or whether it was a duplicate journey as this would be close to the Oldham’s September holiday week.
The building behind was relatively short-lived and was demolished to make way for the Sainsbury’s supermarket now on the site. On the extreme left is the corner of the old Central baths. Opened in 1854, even in 1948 they were the oldest public baths still in use in the country and didn’t close unitl around 1975. I don’t think I was alone in being put off swimming for life as a result of school visits there!
