40 was one of a batch of eight bogie single-deck saloons new to Burnley in 1903. This type of tram was quite popular in the Burnley fleet with nineteen being bought over the years.
40 survived long enough to become part of the Burnley, Colne and Nelson Joint Transport Committee fleet on 1st April 1933 but survived only a little longer as the system was abandoned on 7th May 1935.
