Looking west along Union Street the utility diversion works are in full swing. The modern building just to right of centre at the junction with Waterloo Street is an office of the Great Places Housing Group, formerly the Manchester Methodist Housing Association.

The site was once the home of one of the first supermarkets in Oldham, Payless, where as I recall Green Shield Stamps were to be had in abundance. It later became the Squire Bancroft furniture store. Most buses heading west along Union Street once used to turn up Waterloo Street here.
