Subject: Metrolink under construction

Metrolink was coming. The site of the Oldham Central stop before construction work had started. Another Grade II listed building on Union Street is seen on the right, the terracotta Prudential Assurance Buildings.

This was designed by the noted architect Alfred Waterhouse, whose credits also include Manchester Town Hall and Rochdale’s Town Hall tower.

In the cellar of the building was the Cafe Monico, a popular establishment for many years, becoming part of the Berni Inn chain in the 1960s.
