Subject: Taff-Ely BC 5 (NNY 762E)
Chassis: AEC Regent V 2MD3RA
Body: Metro-Cammell H34/26F
Location: Fiddler’s Elbow, A470(T)
Date: 13-Jul-1974

It is likely that 5 is returning from Treharris or Nelson after a summer day at the seaside, the number 6 in the nearside window indicating it was one of several buses making the trip that day.

It is below the junction at Fiddler’s Elbow approaching Traveller’s Rest, just above where the dual-carriageway section of the A470(T) ended at that time. On the hillside immediately above the roof of the bus can be seen the long-closed formation of the Taff Vale Pontypridd to Nelson railway.

There is a slight mystery attached to this photograph, as this bus entered service on 1st July 1967 and its intial seven-year Certificate of Fitness would be expected to run out by the end of June 1974. It clearly hasn’t been overhauled, otherwise it would be in the later Azure Blue livery. Did Taff-Ely do something to spread out the recertification of this batch as seven buses would be a lot for a small operator to recertify at once?
