Many years before, the photographer would have been stood on the bank of the Glamorganshire Canal and Albion Colliery would be to the south. All this had been swept away though with the building of this new road, which had only recently been opened at the time of the photograph.

80 is returning from a day trip to the seaside, almost certainly Barry Island, and is likely to be headed for the Treharris area. Many clubs in that area relied on Humphreys of Pontypridd for such excursions and Humphreys themselves relied on Taff-Ely for extra capacity.
