By the time of this photograph there were just two of the original type of Leyland Nationals left in the fleet and both were with the Parfitt's fleet. Volvo-powered 397 has just come round from the centre of Pontlottyn on a road that doesn't seem to have a name, although it was once a continuation of Heol Evan Wynne.
Up the path to the right there is mounted a pair of colliery winding wheels as a memory of the coal industry and its workers. Just by here was Mardy Colliery (not to be confused with the one in Maerdy!), the crossing name here being a historic one when a rail connection from that colliery crossed the road here to reach the Rhymney station of the Brecon and Merthyr Railway. The line would have run just behind the trees.
