Subject: Leicester C. T. 178 Maker:English Electric, Preston Truck: Brill 21E Seating: 34/22 Location: Leicester, Abbey Park Road Date: c.1920
178 was the highest-numbered service tram in Leicester (three works cars were numbered 179-181) and was one of a batch of twelve which were some of the first to be built by English Electric after its formation in 1919. These were more powerful than the earlier trams, with two 40 HP motors, although earlier trams were in time upgraded. This tram was fully enclosed by 1934.
Although the first trams of this batch were withdrawn when quite young, 178 lasted until the closure of the system in 1949.
I believe this photograph is taken on Abbey Park Road, near the tram depot.
