Subject: Leicester C. T. 104
Maker: United Electric Car Company, Preston
Truck: Brill 21E
Seating: 34/22
Location: Preston, Dick, Kerr works
Date: c.1905

104 was one of a batch of twenty-one trams (101-121) built as balcony cars. Surprisingly, the next batch from the same builder reverted to open-top. Apart from the changes resulting from the balcony configuration they were otherwise just like the cars already in service except that these and the subsequent batch had 35HP motors and DB1 controllers of Form G instead of 25HP and Form B used on the earlier trams.

104 was rebuilt as a fully-enclosed car by 1934 and remained in service until 1947.

The photograph has been masked very effectively and I am therefore not certain whether this photograph is in Preston or Leicester - the track does not look like the track found in the yard at Preston but the print certainly 'feels' like those produced by Hoole. The photographer has certainly had trouble trying to eliminate the reflection of the pole that can be seen in the upper deck central window.

Photograph from the GEC Archive, presumed taken by E. Hoole but print not marked
