Subject: Western Welsh U3164 (389 WTG) Chassis: Leyland Tiger Cub PSUC1/11 Body: Willowbrook B45F Location: Barry Island, main car park Date: c.1976
U3164 has brought a smaller party down to Barry Island for the day. This area which had been the main car park also had many railway sidings which originated with the Barry Railway serving the various coal tips and latterly an oil storage terminal.
However, they became much better known as Dai Woodham stored over two hundred steam locomotives there that had been withdrawn by British Railways and he had bought for scrap. Despite getting into very poor condition almost every one survived and they are the mainstay of many preserved railways today. The area has much less interest now, being occupied by housing and a supermarket. Up on the hill in the background is the junction of Clive Road and McQuade Place.
