The 40 is another of Vienna's shorter routes and has only a small stretch of track unique to the route.

Despite the short length it is worked from two depots, with two trams being provided by Währinger Gürtel depot with the rest coming from Hernals. From 2008 A-type ULF cars supplemented the E2 cars (which operated with c5 trailers on Mondays to Fridays) and then from 2012 it was operated every day by larger vehicles with B1 ULFs working in conjunction with the more traditional E2s and c5 trailers.
