81 was the last of a batch of twenty-two open-top bogie cars new in 1901-02. The vestibuled ends were relatively unusual at the time and even more so in combination with the reversed staircase.
The batch received top covers by 1914 and at around the same time were upgraded with DK9 or DK9A 40 hp motors and new DK DB1 K3B controllers.
